Securing a head chef job is what many chefs aspire to – not only are they a leader in the kitchen, but they have many important roles and responsibilities. Tasks that a head chef undertakes include planning, designing and costing menus, liaising with suppliers, managing budgets and supervising all kitchen staff. A good head chef must not only have cooking skills, but they must also be able to work in collaboration with the restaurant manager, cooking team and customer service staff to ensure a business is successful.

Here are our top tips on how you can secure the best head chef jobs:

Gain qualifications

Most great head chefs start off with learning the basics. There are a number of cookery schools where you can gain a qualification in cooking, both here in Australia or overseas. Check out this list for the top culinary schools in Australia.

Complete an apprenticeship

Completing an apprenticeship or traineeship is a great way to get your foot in the door. You’ll learn on-the-job skills, and set the foundation for a head chef job in the future.

Get experience

Once you’ve completed your training, you can start working! Get as much experience as possible and try out all the different stations so you know how a kitchen is run. Work your way up to a Commis Chef role, then a Chef de Partie position, to a Sous Chef role and finally to a head chef job.

Being a head chef can be a very rewarding role, you’ll get to meet lots of different people, try a wide variety of food and drinks from around the world, and have the ability to work anywhere you want!
